Future of Connectivity in Europe

On 19 February 2025, BEREC Chair 2025 Robert Mourik (ComReg, Ireland) participated in the panel discussion “Reimagining Connectivity Policy for Europe: Ensuring Consumers Benefit from Technological Advancements”, which was held as part of the Future of Connectivity event. The session brought together key policymakers, industry leaders, and experts to explore how emerging technologies, particularly Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite broadband, can enhance connectivity across Europe.

The panel underscored the importance of aligning technological advancements with consumer needs, ensuring that connectivity solutions remain resilient, commercially viable, and accessible to all.

As part of his contribution, the BEREC Chair shared insights on consumer protection, digital inclusion, and regulatory considerations. Emphasizing the importance of fair, competitive, and sustainable connectivity solutions, he highlighted how policymakers can balance industry innovation with affordability for end users. He also stressed that networks are becoming more and more heterogeneous, and mobile, Wi-Fi and satellite coverage are used together to provide the consumer with the best connectivity.

“The growth of new satellite technologies has been significant, and offers unprecedented opportunities for global connectivity and digital inclusion. Society benefits from many positive impacts from satellite connectivity, especially at locations in hard-to-reach areas or at times of crisis by providing redundancy for terrestrial networks. The deployment of satellite constellations can also help competition dynamics for a variety of use cases, but BEREC supports a technology neutral approach to all such developments and supports European end-users to make informed choices.”

The discussion contributed to ongoing efforts to shape Europe’s connectivity strategy as part of the Digital Decade initiative. As the EU aims to expand high-speed internet access by 2030, collaboration between industry stakeholders and regulators will remain essential in delivering reliable, future-proof connectivity solutions.
