BEREC promotes responsible AI development and regulation

AI

Assessing and addressing the key challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) is necessary to ensure that this set of technologies benefit European citizens. BEREC believes that several aspects of AI, such as competition dynamics, internet openness, environmental footprint, sustainability, and cybersecurity, must be carefully evaluated and managed to ensure that the public’s interests are upheld and prioritised. On 23 September 2024, the BEREC Vice-Chair Kostas Masselos participated in the AI Summit, a global event for AI and Machine Learning that took place on line.

Kostas Masselos emphasised that BEREC will continue monitoring AI advancements and their impact on electronic communications, and ensure that regulatory measures keep pace with technological developments. In doing so, BEREC will continue to collaborate with the EU institutions and other European bodies and networks to ensure that new digital technology, services, and products are being provided for the benefit of European citizens.

Speaking at the summit, Kostas Masselos reaffirmed BEREC's commitment to monitoring AI advancements and their impact on electronic communications closely:

“The telecom industry is a mature industry and machine learning (and AI) will probably serve goals such as network performance optimization and operational cost reduction. Out of the various possibilities, I think advancing network predictability, dynamic radio planning and spectrum sharing, together with power management optimization and network security applications will probably give us the most interesting use cases.”

Earlier this year, BEREC released a high-level position on AI and virtual worlds that outlined its key regulatory considerations. BEREC is also playing an active role in the Digital Markets Act (DMA) high-level group, which issued a public statement on AI on 22 May 2024.
